She chose the stage name Bea in honor of her late father. She also wrote an article for The Guardian on her family's suicide experience. Bea (and her younger sister Sinead) was raised in a home by Helen Moloney who was a teacher and jockey trainer who was also a professional jockey. Her family were obsessed with horses and race meetings. Bea started out her career as a tour-guide for the Irish National Stud. However, she realized early on that racing wasn't the right fit for her.
